Margaritas Tortilleria Y Taqueria: Authentic Mexican Food on the Alabama Gulf Coast
by Shelly of Beach'n'RiverFoley, AlabamaLike Tacos? Speak Spanish? Craving a real, authentic Mexican food fiesta? Habla Espanol? If so, I recommend phoning Margaritas Tortilleria Y Taqueria located on South Commercial Drive in Foley for a taco take-out. (Gelato Joes is located on the same corner of Commercial Dr --- across from Winn Dixie or Blockbuster Video in Foley. As you travel South on Commercial Dr. toward the laundromat, Margaritas is located in the complex on the East side of the street). Margaritas is known to Spanish speaking locals as having the most authentic Mexican food around. Any given afternoon the restaurant is full of workers eating breakfasts or lunches of Chorizo and eggs to Menudo (a tripe specialty) with Bebidas (drinks) of Aquas Frescas (just like you see in carts throughout Mexico) Typically women arrive around 10:30 a.m. to purchase pounds of freshly made tortillas to take home. On occasion you might find Pan Dulce (freshly made sweet breads) from the bakery located in the building next door. If you are especially lucky you might pick up a warm "Cochinito" (a dense pig shaped gingerbread treat) or find Tres Leches cake available. But don't try asking any questions about the food in English. Neither the owner or staff speak or understand English. In fact, menus are written in Spanish so you must be at least slightly familiar with what you want if you want to order. My suggestion? To feed a family of four order a pound of freshly made "Tortillas Frescas" $1.40; una libra de "Carne Asada" (grilled steak) un orden de Salsa Picosa y un orden de Pico de Gallo "Para Llevar" (to take) so you may arrive to the restaurant, pay by cash or credit card and leave with enough "fixings" to make your own Taco Fiesta --- all for around $20. Have some guacamole, a bag of chips, Rotel, chopped cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes, grated cheese and onions on hand and you can arrive home or to your vacation rental to enjoy tacos made "your way." Want to really impress? Turn on the grill and slightly grill tortillas before serving. Char marks makes the meal feel even more exotic. (If grills are prohibited simply pre-heat a flat pan or griddle, place the tortilla in the pan until it rises in the middle, flip and store under a covered towel until ready to serve.) Trust me, if you can manage the few spoken words needed to place an order, you will have the best, most authentic Mexican taco meal deal this side of border!
