The Beau Rivage Biloxi

The Beau Rivage Biloxi Hotel and Casino opened in March 1999. It was conceived and developed by Steve Wynn, head of Mirage Resorts, headquartered in Las Vegas. Wynn's Bellagio, which opened in Las Vegas in 1998, set the bar for casino elegance.

The Beau Rivage, at a cost of almost 700 million dollars, compares favorably with the Bellagio, albeit on a smaller scale. Cost overruns on the Beau Rivage were a major factor in Wynn losing control of Mirage Resorts. Wynn wasn't pleased with losing his empire, even though he pocketed a half billion dollars from the sale, but Biloxi, Mississippi, certainly came out a winner. The Beau Rivage Biloxi is magnificent, and the attention to detail is amazing.

Beautiful Shore

Beau Rivage in French means "beautiful shore". The name is fitting since the hotel rooms (1,780 of them, including 66 luxury suites) offer stunning views of either the Gulf of Mexico or the back bay.

The rooms of the Beau Rivage Biloxi measure approximately 400 square feet; the suites are more than half that size. We have stayed at the hotel several times and the amenities far exceeded the price we paid. My favorite amenity (actually for me it's a necessity), is the silence. Once the door is shut, it is quiet which means I have a shot at getting a good night's sleep.

When It's Dinner Time

The many dining choices at the hotel/casino include Memphis Q Smokehouse & Barbecue, Terrace Cafe (open 24 hours), BR Prime Steakhouse, La Cucina, Coral, Todd English's Olives, Jia Asian Cuisine, and Roasted Bean Coffee Bistro.

Wonderful dining choices aside, when I am in Biloxi (or Vegas for that matter) all I care about are the buffets and the coffee houses. (Every once in awhile I'll give in and try one of the specialty restaurants, but while I'm there I'm thinking "big portions of my favorite foods are at the buffet, a heck of a lot cheaper that this.)"

The Beau Rivage Biloxi buffet is aptly named "The Buffet." It is a little more expensive than the average Biloxi casino buffet, but the few extra dollars spent is worth it. The seafood at the dinner buffet is outstanding.

We usually enjoy a leisurely late breakfast at the buffet just before checkout at the nearby hotel lobby. Again, it is a little more than the average Biloxi buffet, but worth the few extra dollars.

Entertainment

We try to plan our overnight visits around a good show at the Beau Rivage Theatre. The theater holds 1500 people and almost every seat is a good one. I say almost only because we bought some of the last seats to see the Blue Man Group a couple years ago. We were seated at the very top partly behind some of the lighting equipment. It worked out great because just after the show began, an usher asked us to follow her. My wife didn't want to go - she though we were being invited to be on stage at some point in the show. She finally gave in and followed me. To her relief, the usher led us to some vacant second row seats - hooray! The show was great and cost us less than half of what we paid to see the Blue Man Group at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

If you are vacationing near Gulf Shores and enjoy concerts or stage productions, check show dates. A two hour drive to the Beau Rivage will add variety to a beach vacation.

Shopping

I don't care about the shopping when I'm in Biloxi but my wife likes to browse. If you like upscale retail establishments, you will probably enjoy spending some time on the promenade. The shops are probably about as upscale as anything you will find within at least a hundred miles in either direction, probably much farther. And I like the coffee shop being located almost dead center - where my wife knows where to find me.

The Pool

During the warm weather months we like to spend a couple hours, usually just after the buffet, at the pool. All of the Biloxi casino resorts have one, but the Beau Rivage Biloxi's is particularly nice. The pool is adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico and features lush tropical landscaping and decor. You usually won't be seated long at poolside before somebody is asking if you would like something to drink.

Most people forget about the pool when they are visiting the casinos, but it adds a relaxing hour or two to an overnight stay.
