Biloxi Mississippi

The beautiful city of Biloxi Mississippi is located on the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. Its history dates back three hundred years. Within that history there were many devastating hurricanes, including most recently Hurricane Katrina. The residents of Biloxi are resilient and immediately started working to bring their beloved city back to its original glory.

Biloxi is truly a happening place. It would be impossible to do everything that is offered in the area while on vacation. That is probably why vacationers keep returning as there are always new things to do and experience! Boredom is not an option in Biloxi Mississippi.

Beauvoir Mansion

Beauvoir was the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It is now the site of his Presidential Library. The compound has over fifty-two acres of land. There are numerous structures on the property to tour, including the Confederate Soldier’s Museum. The botanical garden is spectacular during every season. There is also a Confederate Cemetery with the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier Monument. The property is decorated with period pieces representing the time that Jefferson Davis resided there.

Beaches

While you aren't going to see a lot of surf without taking the ferry to Ship Island, no trip to Biloxi Mississippi would be complete without going to the beach even if it's just for a short walk. If you have more time, you can bask in the glorious sun on the soft sand and then cool of in the brilliant azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico. These beautiful beaches are a sun and sea lover’s paradise!

Golf

There are numerous golf courses throughout Biloxi for golfers to test their skill. Enjoy any one of them or go golf course hopping to try as many as you can while on vacation!

Fishing

When you look up the word fishing in the dictionary, a picture of Biloxi Mississippi should be there! Fishing was the city's main livelihood long before the casinos arrived. The fishing in the area is excellent. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has twenty-seven miles of public beach, all of it open to fishing.

You can fish from the piers or fishing bridges or hop on a charter boat for deep sea, inshore, or freshwater fishing. Fish for saltwater fish like bluefish, flounder, redfish and speckled trout and freshwater fish like bluegills, catfish, and largemouth bass. How many places can you book a shrimping expedition and see firsthand how those shrimp you enjoy back home leave the sea?

Mardi Gras Museum

The Mardi Gras Museum, located in the historic Magnolia Hotel, is a must see place in Biloxi. There are displays showing the history of Mardi Gras dating back three centuries! Costumes and other festival memorabilia are on exhibit as well. There is a multitude of photographs of the celebration for you to enjoy. Admission is really inexpensive so don’t miss this museum.

Ship Island Ferry

French explorers gave Ship Island its name in 1699. The island was an important port for the French, and so many colonists arrived to the United States via the island that it became known as the "Plymouth Rock of the Gulf Coast."

Today, the barrier island is a part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Take the 11 mile ferry trip to Ship Island and visit historic Fort Massachusetts.

At Ship Island you can enjoy undeveloped beaches. Swim in the surf, fish or just relax.

Biloxi Lighthouse

The Biloxi Lighthouse is Biloxi's most prominent landmark. You can't miss it if you are traveling from Biloxi to Gulfport on U.S Hwy 90. Built in 1848, it was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the South. For a small fee, you can climb the 57 steps and 8-rung ladder. The lighthouse makes a great photo-op.

The Pleasant Reed House

Located on the site of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, this museum recounts the story of Pleasant Reed, a former slave. Reed was a carpenter who built the original home himself. His home was destroyed by Katrina in 2005. Curators saved the original archival materials and photographs and relocated them to this reconstruction of the original. Learn how the common working man lived in the early 1900s at Pleasant Reed.

Katrina Memorial

The Katrina Memorial opened in 2006. It was created by volunteers and the crew from the television series "Extreme Makeover." This monument has been dedicated to all of the victims lost during Hurricane Katrina. The memorial is twelve feet tall, which is about the same level the storm surge was on the Town Green. It depicts a wave made out of inlaid tile. There is also a glass case which holds artifacts found after the flood waters receded.
