Daylight Donuts Alligators - Wade Park, Gulf Shores, Alabama

by Beach'n'River
(Foley, Al)

This Donut Shop is Out of Business

Caution: Be advised that feeding "people food" to wildlife is not good for them or the people and pets that the alligators might mistake for a donut.

Gulf Sshores Alligator

Daylight Donuts in Gulf Shores, AL. I could tell you about the hot, freshly made donuts and the several varieties served from inside the cases of the new and nicely built shop, but chances are if you drive Hwy 59 going South toward beaches you will see the red neon sign flash and stop to visit anyway. The flashing sign follows the same principal as Krispy Kreme Donut shops --- when the sign is red and brightly lit, donuts are grabbed straight from the fryolator into your bag/box/tray to enjoy.

But donuts are not what I will talk about today.

I want to brag about how you will most likely see an alligator for a photo op as a result of people --- mostly children --- who toss their donuts in the lagoon waters below. When I say "brag," I mean how often can you go to a park to witness an alligator feasting on donuts? Sure, you know they are there --- the signs say "Beware of Alligators" or something to that effect. Nearby is Wade Park directly across from Scoops Ice Cream shop. I've walked the boardwalk trail on several occasions to "catch" a glimpse of an alligator --- awake or sleeping --- to no avail.

Yet on nearly every occasion I detour to Daylight Donuts I witness the mammoth creature lying in wait for the next crumb to fall like manna from above via the hands of those who are are looking for a story to take back home. If you don't believe what a popular attraction it is, try counting the cars that arrive once people are seen lining the fence. What do most people do? They go inside the store, purchase hot off the fryolator donuts to toss the expectant creature below --- for their own photo op or enjoyment.

So the next time you drive by Daylight Donuts observe the fence line overlooking the lagoon. If there are people lined, stop and load your camera. You'll most likely leave with one great photo of a giant alligator to share with friends and family.

And that is reason enough to make Daylight Donuts a "must see" Gulf Shores area attraction.
