Dinner at Wintzel's Oyster House

by Jennifer

On a business trip to Mobile in December, I asked the front desk staff at my hotel to recommend a truly great seafood restaurant. I was sent, enthusiastically, to Wintzel's Oyster House, on Dauphin.

This place did not disappoint. They had every kind of seafood I could have wished for, from old fashioned melt in my mouth crab cakes, to raw oysters, to the biggest shrimp I have ever seen. They even had steaks on the menu, but with all of the delicious seafood to choose from, I didn't even consider ordering a steak.

I ordered crab cakes, a dozen raw oysters, and a combo plate of fried shrimp and soft shell crab. My associate ordered crab claws and a plate of fried oysters. The amount of food this place serves borders on absurd. Our plates were literally piled high with fried deliciousness. Neither of us were able to come anywhere near finishing our plates, and we ended up taking home at least half of our food.

The atmosphere was very laid back, wish a casual beach feel and nautical themed decorations. It was pretty loud inside, even on a weeknight, but the noise fit in with the atmosphere, and it was clear that everyone was there to have a good time, and they were certainly succeeding with their goal.

I would come back to Wintzel's in a heartbeat, should I ever find myself in Mobile again. I wish I could get this sort of seafood inland. The food, the generous portion sizes, the atmosphere, and the very affordable prices ensured that I will remember my visit for a long time to come.
