Gulf Shores Kayaking - Try it on the Beautiful Bon Secour River

Have you ever tried Gulf Shores kayaking? Relatively few have at this point, but it is an activity that is quickly gaining many fans. There are several rental companies that will introduce you to canoeing or kayaking on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Most of them are on Pleasure Island, and most offer immediate access to areas that are almost impossible to see from the shore or from a larger watercraft. It is a lot of fun being almost in the water, but still snug inside a kayak.

Paddling close to the shore will keep a photographer busy capturing shots of wildlife and coastal plant life that the average beach visitor never gets a chance to see except on the Discovery Channel.

I have never met a person who didn't enjoy watching dolphins. Dolphin cruises are very popular in Gulf Shores for just that reason. But as enjoyable as dolphin cruises are, they don't even come close to being in a kayak with dozens of dolphins swimming all around you.Gulf Shores KayakingMy wife and I recently enjoyed one of the best afternoons on the water that we have ever had on the Alabama Gulf Coast. We drove over the Intracoastal Canal Bridge and traveled another ten minutes to Beach'n'River, located on a tributary of the Bon Secour River.

After arriving we had an enjoyable conversation with the owners, Jerry and Shelly. Beach'n'River rents both canoes and kayaks-- the choice is yours. Kathy and I chose kayaks on this trip. If you've never kayaked before, no problem. The instruction takes less than two minutes and the learning curve for the basics is probably less than that. Remove your shoes, put your kayak in the water and start paddling. Very easy.

Renting directly on the river puts you in calm freshwater immediately after launch. You're going to see a different part of the Alabama Gulf Coast than what you've seen on the Gulf of Mexico and the back bays. This adventure is going to be very quiet and peaceful while in the river, and if you want to go into bigger saltwater you can go all the way into Bon Secour Bay.

We were on the water about three hours, and we loved every minute of it.
