Gulf Shores Motels

Many of the older Gulf Shores motels were demolished during the last twenty years to make room for condo developments. It is really quite amazing how fast that happened, and how quickly tourists grew to love renting condos for their beach vacations.

Today, condos are preferred by the majority of beach vacationers, but there is still a market for motels and it is one where demand vastly outstrips supply during the peak rental season. If you prefer staying in a motel, book early. During the busiest times on the Alabama Gulf Coast "No Vacancy" signs are likely to be found on motel signs all the way from the beach to Bay Minette. Condos are even more likely to be booked early and almost all of them require minimum stays, so it is inadvisable to take off on a spur-of-the-moment trip to the beach during the summer or busy spring and fall weekends when the roads and beaches are crowded with people who planned their trip months in advance.

Most of the newer Gulf Shores motels have been built near Alabama Highway 59 (Gulf Shores Parkway.) Motels a little "up the road" have their advantages, but it's best to get the obvious out of the way first-- they are not on the beach. However now, much more than in the recent past, there's a lot more to do off the beach. Amusement parks, golf courses and the "Little Zoo that Could" are also on Highway 59. The Wharf, a new mixed use development, has enough things to do to keep a family busy for more than a day. (You might even catch your favorite national touring act at the Amphitheater).

Yes, there's plenty more to do on the Alabama Gulf Coast besides the beach, and when you are ready to go to the beach the public beach areas have not only been improved, they've practically been rebuilt-- new boardwalks, new restroom facilities, new showers, new pavilions, and even more sand.

And there's another big reason to consider a motel off the beach-- you might save some money.

Another option is a cross between a condo and a motel-- Brett-Robinson's Phoenix All Suites. These are one bedroom beachfront units in two different towers, one on each side of the intersection where Gulf Shores Parkway meets Beach Boulevard. All units include a kitchen and an extra bath, with a balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

Yes, there are still Gulf Shores motels on the Alabama Gulf Coast, but if you want one, book early.
