The Whistling Squirrel

by Claire
(Danish)

A Good Place for Travelers, Not Tourists

For me the difference between a traveler and a tourist is that the tourist wants to come, take a pretty picture and then see nothing they weren't expecting to see. A traveler travels to be surprised.

The Whistling Squirrel in Pensacola is both a great place for locals and for the real traveler who is looking to experience the Gulf Coast Culture. I went there with my husband, daughter, brother and parents on a rainy Christmas Eve last year. We wanted something that was not a chain, and the promise of comfort food in a buffet style drew us in.

What we found surpassed our expectations. We were the only people in the place and they put more food out-- hot and fresh-- just for us. Everything but the cheesecake is hand made, from scratch not Sysco Food Service. It was a real treat.

My favorite was the meatloaf and the corn casserole. Everyone enjoyed comfort food favorites. My daughter loved the train track that runs along the ceiling with a model train. And the service was excellent. We will be back!
