Thunder on the Gulf

Some of the fastest powerboats in the world return to Orange Beach, Alabama on August 16-19 for the 7th Annual "Thunder on the Gulf."

Interest in "Thunder" grows stronger each year, so it is best to book your lodging early. The race course stretches from Perdido Beach Resort near Perdido Pass to Phoenix I. While many people prefer to be on the beach during the race, the best place to see the action is from the patios and balconies or the beachfront condos and motels.

Like NASCAR, with which it has been compared, powerboat racing can have its mishaps - last year a boat sunk. The other boats just zoomed on by.

A favorite part of the race days is Friday's meet and greet at Race Village at the Wharf. The powerboats are on display, and the drivers sign autographs. Race Village is a good place to pick up "Thunder" merchandise.

7th Annual Thunder on the Gulf Cancelled (2009)

Originally scheduled for August 13-16, 2009 in Orange Beach, Alabama, the Gulf Coast Powerboat Association has announced that that the 7th Annual Thunder on the Gulf has been cancelled.

“This cancellation is disappointing news to our board members, race fans and local charities that benefited from funds generated by "Thunder,” said John Brunick, president of the GCPA.

The current condition of the economy was cited as the reason behind the decision.

“This decision by our board of directors was extremely difficult but we believe it was the best decision under the circumstances.”

We understand and support the difficult decision of the GCPA,” said Herb Malone, president/CEO of the CVB. “The Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission joins with the GCPA to thank our loyal race fans who have supported this annual event, and we look forward to inviting them back for a bigger and better "Thunder" in 2010.”
