Try Wheel House Restaurant

by Debra
(Foley, AL)

If you're looking for an elegant night out, the Wheel House Restaurant on Gulf Shores Parkway might not be for you. It's a small, very casual restaurant, and it doesn't offer much in the way of romance or ambiance. But if you're looking for some of the best seafood you've ever tasted, then the Wheel House Restaurant is definitely the right place to go to.

I recommend starting any meal at the Wheel House out with some of their seafood bisque. It is the tastiest soup I've ever had, and it's light enough that you'll still have room for plenty more. When it comes to the main course, everything on the menu is pretty great, but what really hits the spot for me is their fish and chips. The batter is incredible. I've never had anything else like it.

I also really recommend trying something from their bakery. I get it to go since I'm usually stuffed by the time I leave. Their cookie selection is incredible. My kids just go nuts over it. My personal favorite thing there is their pies. The coconut cream pie is to die for.

The staff there is very friendly and fun. I always get my food there very quickly. It doesn't have the wait time that many of the other restaurants in the area in spite of the fact that it's so small. It seems very well managed.

This is definitely my pick for the best meal in the area. It's perfect for families or for a simple night out. The foods and bakery just can't be beat.

I Also Loved The Wheelhouse Tempura-Battered Fish
by: Beachin' Betty

I have to agree with Debra I don't believe there is another seafood restaurant in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area that makes fried fish dipped in a tempura batter. It is my favorite way to eat fried fish --- especially with a splash of Malt Vinegar atop.

Most restaurants around here fry fish either in a cornmeal or in a flour/cornmeal mix.

The Wheelhouse Restaurant also had unusual Russian daily specials.

Many patrons were probably not aware the owners made their baked goods in-house --- from scratch --- as opposed to frozen, bake-n-serve like what is served in many restaurants/grocers.

This little "hole in the wall" garnered several 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor.com and was rated #1 --- ranking above several more popular restaurants.

Sadly it closed.

A BBQ place now occupies the space. The once turquoise building is now a shocking yellow with red flames (if I recall correctly) and is called "Hog Wild BBQ."

It is on my list of places to eat. I hear good reviews so the next review may be "Try Hog Wild located in the building formerly known as the Wheel House Restaurant."
