Wade Ward Nature Park
GULF SHORES Wade Ward Nature park is located just two blocks off the beach on Gulf Shores Parkway (Highway 59.) The focal point of the park is a long, elevated boardwalk over a coastal wetland. This salt marsh separates the saltwater of Little Lagoon from the fresh water of Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park. The boardwalk is not an attraction that will capture the attention of most people for more than 20 minutes (unless there's an alligator hanging around), but it is a worthwhile visit; marshes like this are normally viewed from a sidewalk or highway. We didn't see any alligators on on this visit. We wouldn't have fed them if we did. The park is a part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. There are usually some big birds in the water, like these brown pelicans. Mullet were jumping all over the place. A cast net would have caught these. A section of the boardwalk. Just some of the flowers that were in bloom. Somebody was planning on blue crabs for dinner. The park is little piece of nature in the midst of huge souvenir stores and restaurants. (In fact, Pizza Hut is next door). Take time for a visit when you are in the area.
