Wintzell's Oyster House

A Landmark Destination Not to Be MissedBeing a native of the Northern states, I had only heard about “Southern Hospitality.” It wasn’t until I was down in Mobile, Alabama that I got to truly experience it! Since I was with a group of people, the choice of eatery wasn’t always up to me; however, we all enjoyed Wintzell’s super-tasty food, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere so much that we went back three times (we tried a fourth but we were too hungry to wait!).
It was a pleasant surprise to find out we had selected a landmark restaurant to boot! Due to a severe intolerance to gluten (found in wheat, rye, barley and some oats), I generally do not dine out; even if I am assured the food is gluten-free, cross-contamination is often the culprit of an allergic reaction. The staff at Wintzell’s, however, were very understanding and patient and made sure I ate more than a salad!
I am also happy to report that I ate there each time without any adverse reactions. The menus are cleverly worded and contain something for most any appetite. If you are at a loss for words, the walls (and many other available spaces) are neatly plastered with clever sayings, anecdotes, and (sometimes hokey) phrases which make for good conversation fillers (or excuses to avoid one!).
Even at their busiest times, the bustling kitchen staff never hesitated to disappoint nor delay! If you are looking for an authentic taste of the Southern U.S. (even if you don’t eat oysters), then definitely add Wintzell’s to your itinerary (they have numerous locations!)
